Grandma’s Homemade Split Pea Soup

Simple, Hearty, Healthy

Amazing Split Pea Soup!

This is my grandmother’s recipe.

Made with simple, healthy ingredients.

Ingredients

1 pound of dried split peas

8 cups of water

1 pound of ham hocks

1 1/2 cups of onion, finely chopped

1 cup of celery, chopped (tops included)

1/2 cup of carrots, finely chopped

1 small potato, diced

2 cloves

2 bay leaves

1 clove garlic, minced

4 peppercorns

1 teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons of vinegar

1 teaspoon of sugar

Directions

In a large dutch oven bring peas and water to a boil. Simmer 2 minutes. Remove from heat, cover, and let sit for 1 hour.

Add ham hocks, onion, celery, carrots, potato, cloves, bay leaves, garlic and peppercorns.

Simmer covered fro 2 1/2 – 3 hours. Remove from heat.

Remove ham hocks and pull of meat. Set aside.

Remove cloves and bay leaves. Throw away.

Refrigerate for an hour or so. Pull out and skim off grease layer.

(Don’t blend soup and then expect to be able to skim off grease ~ that doesn’t work!)

After skimming the grease, put soup into a blender and blend it until smooth.

Put back into dutch oven. Add in ham off of ham hocks.

Add sugar, salt, and vinegar.

If desired, add more salt and pepper.

Enjoy!
