Gingerbread With Old-Fashioned Lemon Sauce

When You Want To Taste The Old South!

Ingredients

1/2 cup Crisco shortening (do not substitute)

3/4 cup sugar

1/2 cup molasses

1 large egg

2 cups flour

1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cloves

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1 teaspoon ground (or fresh) nutmeg

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 cup boiling water

Directions for Gingerbread

In an electric mixer, cream shortening, sugar, molasses and egg together.

Sift together flour, baking soda, salt and spices.

Add flour mixture to creamed mixture and blend well.

Add boiling water and beat until smooth.

Baking in a well-greased and floured 9-inch iron skillet at 350 degrees for 25- 30 minutes.

Set aside for approximately 10 minutes before removing from the skillet.

(While gingerbread is cooling, make Lemon Sauce.)

Old Fashioned Lemon Sauce

1/2 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1/4 cup water

1 large egg, beaten

3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

grated rind of 1 lemon

Directions for Old Fashioned Lemon Sauce

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan.

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil.

Spoon hot Lemon Sauce over gingerbread.

Dust with powdered sugar.
